the 'rainbow' is not a filter, it's light dispersion effect rendered in 3d application (Luxology modo).

hi, thanks a lot for comment! This image indeed is a mixture of a few different techniques. I've got an article published on CGSociety where I talk about creative process of one of my dogs (not this one though):

This image was produced in similar way however I did a lot more work in Photoshop and I rendered some extra layers with dispersion effect in 3D. I hope that helps!

That's outstanding. I only just started learning 3D in college this year, and I'm still getting my head around it. It's a bit of a tricky bitch, but such a powerful tool.
